West Chilcotin Forest Products:
wanted a presence on the net to promote the unique partnership between
community members, industry, and the Ulkatcho First Nations in the
operation of this mill.
The advantage of this site is that it loads
very quickly. This was necessary to an area with very, very slow
Internet connections since all mill management and office personnel
use this site for their emails. I still feel I've met that challenge
with an informative, colorful and interesting site.
This site was first built in 2007 and had a considerably different
look than it does now. In 2007 the partnership changed and I felt
that the site needed an upgrade and fresh look as well. WCFP agreed
but the management still wanted this site to focus on community
and region more than on the product itself. They also wanted more
photos of the people and the area, and less text and emphasis on
the facility.
Rather than the black background as before, I chose white this time
with easier to read text. I designed a brand new header using an
image of a block of wood and Photoshop techniques to incorporate
the mill's eagle logo. Over all, the newly designed site is fresh,
crisp, fast loading and easy to navigate.
Pricing: The
initial site was $600 USD. It was not and is not an involved build
with regards to authoring environment nor is it an overly large
site. The photos were reasonably easy to prep because they have
no special edge treatment. The variety and age of photos on the
old site posed some challenges. However, I was able to obtain new
digital photos for the new site design, making it all a bit more
consistent. The new header took several tries before both I and
management were satisified that it typified the area and the mill
product. Since neither text nor photos were provided to me the site
was still time consuming but the site rebuild was included in a
long standing maintenance contract. However, if I had to build the
site from scratch, including the new header, it would be $1,000
CAD.
